The shortage of IT specialists is becoming a problem. Where and how to get qualified IT professionals?

A particularly large number of companies felt the lack of IT specialists in 2019. In Europe, almost 70% of all companies with 10 or more employees had enormous difficulties in filling positions.

Finding good specialists - a challenge for companies

The lack of skilled employees is a typical problem in Europe, but it is even more felt in the IT field, the demand for IT specialists keeps growing at a tremendous pace. Almost 70% of all companies have already had major problems filling vacant IT positions in 2019. The reasons for this are diverse. Some companies complained about the small number of applications, while others received enough applications from interested parties, but these proved insufficiently qualified or demanded exorbitant salaries.

Employers face recruitment difficulties.

  • 69% of businesses say filling positions is “Difficult”.
  • 24% say the process is “Very Difficult” – highest of the past six quarters.
  • Only 7% report filling positions as “Very Easy”.

It is interesting that the problem has intensified over the past few years. In 2017, for example, only 64% of the companies surveyed had difficulty filling positions. The word "only" has a bitter aftertaste in this case.

So the question is: What can companies do about the IT skills shortage? Or: Are there good alternatives to filling the positions in-house?

IT jobs remain vacant for longer

IT jobs, in general, are much more difficult to fill than other jobs. 40% say that it takes more time to fill IT positions than other positions, a year ago, the figure was significantly lower, at 31%. The time for which an open IT position remains vacant on average has also increased from five to six months. 18% of companies say that IT positions generally remain vacant for more than half a year, a year ago this was a problem only the case of 10% of the companies. These are the results of a study on the job market for IT specialists in Europe, which was carried out by the digital association Bitkom.

Permanent costs for downtime, certification and training of IT specialists

If companies are lucky and find the right qualified staff, there is often another hurdle that smaller companies, in particular, cannot tackle. Continuous training courses, seminars and training courses that every IT specialist needs are worth mentioning here. In addition, there are certifications that are essential in the highly agile and daily changing digital world.

IT Outsourcing – the response to the IT skills shortage

In times of IT skills shortages, finding skilled developers is becoming an ever-greater challenge. In many cases, this is not necessary at all. The solution is: Outsourcing.

Globally, the proportion of companies partnering with external IT service providers, which partially or completely outsource their IT department is growing, by 2023, it should increase by 20%.

For companies whose core business is not IT, it is not necessary at all to employ an army of developers. Outsourcing allows companies to concentrate on their core business, to rely on trained specialists from the external service providers and not fall behind in the field of digitalization.

The most important factor on which the success of IT Outsourcing depends, is the careful selection of a suitable partner for your company. You should make sure that the partner is 24/7 available so that you always have a contact person. In addition, define the working terms and areas of responsibility in the contract to avoid any confusion. Be sure to use a non-disclosure agreement to secure your intellectual property.

By choosing a reliable provider, you gain a partner who will give you IT insights and advice you can’t get internally.

The best IT professionals are of course in IT companies

This last reason theoretically speaks for itself. Top IT people have the best career opportunities and the highest potential for further development in IT companies. Here, their continuous training and skills development are the main objective of the company, here they interact and exchange ideas with other IT professionals. Continuously new projects keep IT staff fit and always up to date, which could only be partially guaranteed in a medium-sized company with a smaller IT department.
